WOD 2012 Industry Awards: Decade of Dance – Nappytabs

The World of Dance 2012 Industry Awards recognized Nappytabs, Napoleon and Tabitha Dumo, for years of achievement and dedication to the hip hop dance community by presenting them with the Decade of Dance Award. The husband-and-wife choreography team are most known for their work on So You Think You Can Dance and have an extensive list of credits to their name. With roots starting in Culture Shock Las Vegas, Napoleon and Tabitha evolved as they choreographed for professional sports dance teams, music artists, TV shows, and movies. Mainstream fame came when Nappytabs started working on America’s Best Dance Crew and SYTYCD, making them recognizable all across the country.

Despite wearing an unusual accessory due to a recent surgery, Napoleon was in high spirits as he arrived to the WOD 2012 Industry Awards. He said he was “beside himself” when they were notified of their Decade of Dance Award at “the biggest time that dance has ever had in its history.” He also fondly reflected on the successful year Tabitha and him experienced in 2011. The duo were awarded at the Creative Arts Emmys in September for their choreography on SYTYCD. “For hip hop to be nominated and win, its great for the community,” stated Napoleon.

Nappytabs have given more than ten years of contributions to the dance community, but they are just getting started. They started the year off working on Madonna’s Superbowl halftime show and will subsequently work on her music video as well as Prince’s upcoming video. Their busy schedules will also include TV as they continue their involvement on hit shows American Idol, SYTYCD, and MOBBED. Napoleon was also excited to talk about their involvement in the reboot of In Living Color. They are currently casting for the legendary Fly Girls dance group which spawned the careers of Jennifer Lopez, Rosie Perez, Carrie Ann Inaba, and Laurie Ann Gibson. He credits the Fly Girls as an inspiration to him as a dancer and hopes that they can recreate that road to success for the new group of dancers.

Tabitha later joined her husband on stage to accept their Decade of Dance Award. Host TK Nguyen presented them with their sneaker trophy as the crowd cheered on. The two then talked about how much dance has meant to them over the years and expressed their gratitude for receiving the award. Tabitha closed their speech with very exciting news. They’re having a baby! And if you had any doubts, Tabitha then confirmed that “the baby will come out dancing.”

World of Dance 2012 Industry Awards Recap

The 2^nd Annual World of Dance Industry Awards took place at the ICON Ultra Lounge in LA February 19, 2012. This star studded event was filled with your favorite dancers who were recognized for their contributions to the dance community. Complete with a red carpet and stage, dancers and their fans flooded the scene including I. Am. Me. and Mos Wanted Crew. The night started off with Paul Mitchell offering complimentary hair and makeup as well as Body Armor giving away their delicious products. The air was filled with excitement as appearances from Poreotics, Kyle Hanagami, BGirl Bonita, and many more were made. Dance celebs walked the red carpet and were bombarded with photographers. TK Nguyen kicked off the ceremony with the announcements of the winners for each category which were picked by dance fans themselves online. Soon after came live performances from Chi Town’s Finest Breakers, Mix’d Elements, Bullies, and Breed. During the performances, dance legends Elm Pizarro, Cros 1, Nappytabs, and Napolean and Tabitha Dumo received their awards for their inductions in the World of Dance Hall of Fame. The DJ then kicked off the after party with bumping music and the crazy atmosphere that lasted till 2 in the morning. Check out the pictures from this amazing night.
